The club's monthly competition takes place on the first Wednesday of every month except January. Scores accumulate for the calendar year, and trophies are awarded for highest aggregate in each of the sections - Mono Print Subject, Mono Print Open, Colour Print Subject, Colour Print Open, Projected Image Subject and Projected Image Open. The 'Projected Image' sections embrace both traditional film slides and digital images.

In addition, any image which has been submitted for a monthly competition may be submitted for that year's Image of the Year awards, which are judged separately and for which separate trophies are awarded. There are just three Image of the Year sections - Mono Print, Colour Print and Projected Image. Images which did not win in a monthly competition often take off one of the Image of the Year awards.
